Emek Shaveh

“Emek Shaveh”[1] is a new non-profit association of archaeologists, local residents and human rights activists working to change the role of archaeology in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We believe that archaeology can be used as a bridge between peoples and cultures and that it has the power to influence the dynamic of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in a way that can benefit the future of all the peoples in this region.

Most of our present efforts are concentrated around the site of the “City of David” located in the Palestinian village of Silwan in East Jerusalem, a few dozen meters from the Temple Mount. The site is managed by a private Jewish settler organization which is using the archaeological site to strengthen its hold on the area and advance its political goals: to “strengthen the Jewish connection to Jerusalem through settlement activity in East Jerusalem”.

“Emek Shaveh” is cooperating with the Palestinians residents of Silwan in a number of ways. Amongst others, we offer alternative archaeological tours where we promote an approach that sees archeology as a valuable tool for empowering local communities and creating bridges between people from different cultures, thereby increasing the stability and peace in the region.

[1] The name literally means “the Valley of Shaveh.” Its source is Genesis 14:17: “And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king's dale.” “Shaveh” also means “equal” in Hebrew and “valley of Shaveh” has the colloquial meaning of a place of compromise.
